Accountable Communication TechnologySM (ACT) – Overview

This four and one-half day training is based on a comprehensive theory of group dynamics called FIRO (Fundamental Interpersonal Relationship Orientation), developed by Will Schutz, PhD. The technology includes self-scored questionnaires, group discussions, verbal and non-verbal exercises, and extensive paired and group feedback sessions. The ACT builds team alignment and cohesion by focusing on the relationships within the group.

Objectives

Defensiveness is a business cost. The objective of ACT is to enhance your awareness of your own defenses, their consequence to you, to your team, and to the company. Related training goals are:

Create a climate for openly and honestly giving and receiving new feedback.
Identify and resolve the real blocks to teamwork and productivity.
Use specific tools to resolve conflicts and work more efficiently together.
Realize a new level of trust; experience increased team commitment, enthusiasm, and support.
Increase your decision-making skill as a leader in the “empowerment” era.

Concepts

Openness
The team is characterized by an atmosphere of openness. I can find out how you feel about me, my work, and how it is to work with me anytime I want to know. We do not withhold from one another. I ask straight questions; I give straight answers. If I am doing something you do not like, you inform me at the time. Resentment does not grow.

Self-Determination
When we are involved in a project, there is no question about accountability. Everyone is 100% responsible. Blame does not exist. We deal directly with our differences, see how each of us is contributing to the problem/situation, and how each of us will contribute to the solution.

Self-Awareness
I am self-aware. I know my strengths and weaknesses. I am aware of my defenses, what I am defending, and why. I am aware of how my personal issues affect the workplace.

Team
We deal with interpersonal issues when they block/affect work efficiency. We do not pretend that there is no problem and keep working ineffectively. We eliminate competition that causes resistance to others’ ideas, sabotaging, showing others up, putting others down, etc.
